Islantilla begins construction to connect Urbasur and La Antilla via a cross-country bike lane included in the 'Between Green and Blue' Sustainability Plan‘
The project, with an investment of €326,676.01, is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU Funds, and will be completed in early 2026.
The Avenida de Río Frío in the tourist enclave of Islantilla has been the setting for the official visit of the institutional representatives of the Mancomunidad that jointly manages the City Councils of Lepe and Isla Cristina to learn firsthand about the start of the works of the future transversal bike lane that will connect Urbasur with La Antilla at the beginning of 2026, and which is being executed with financing from the NextGenerationEU Funds of the European Union with a total cost of 326,676.01 euros.
The Executive Vice President of the Commonwealth of Islantilla and First Deputy Mayor of Isla Cristina, Francisco Zamudio, highlighted “the importance of this action which represents an improvement for the destination as it allows for necessary mobility from a sustainability point of view, offering residents and visitors an alternative to motorized transport, and, therefore, directly impacting the environment, in line with our commitment to respecting the environment, always present in this project.”.
Zamudio has taken the opportunity to voice his grievance as Isla Cristina's representative in the Islantilla Association of Municipalities regarding what he considers "a comparative injustice against Isla Cristina in its urban development, since being a town practically surrounded by sea and protected areas, we are not allowed to develop something as fundamental today as a multimodal path that connects us with Islantilla, unlike what happens in other neighboring municipalities, such as Lepe or Cartaya, where the different competent Administrations are not hindering them from deploying their own networks of paths of this kind.".
For her part, the Deputy Mayor of Lepe and Lepe's delegate to the Islantilla Association of Municipalities, Mariana Otero, emphasized the work carried out by this entity "to obtain funding for this important project through European funds, as it represents a significant investment for the destination, a bike-friendly destination that carries out a series of actions throughout the year that highlight its potential as a destination for cycle tourists, reinforced by other complementary infrastructures such as the cycle and pedestrian path from Lepe to La Antilla or from La Antilla to Nueva Umbría, among others.".
The construction work on the new Islantilla bike lane, being carried out by TR CONSTRUYA, SLU, will continue until the beginning of 2026. The project aims to connect and provide continuity along the coastline with a cycling route, linking to the east with the existing cycle and pedestrian path in La Antilla, and to the west with two planned cycling routes by the Isla Cristina City Council: one connecting to the Paseo de Poniente at its junction with Paseo de Riofrío, with a greater focus on sustainable mobility; and another connecting to the same Paseo de Poniente at its junction with the Paseo Marítimo and Calle Ballena in Urbasur, this latter route being more geared towards tourism, and envisioning a future connection to Isla Cristina through the pine forest.
The project to be carried out consists of a cycle path, with two-way traffic and divided into two sections: one that runs through the Río Frío Avenue Park in an East-West direction, and another that runs through the Paseo de Poniente in a North-South direction.
The first section aims to create a route integrated into the existing landscape, prioritizing respect for the existing vegetation. The planned route, while maintaining a distance from the pedestrian walkway bordering the park to the south, will run through the central area of the green space to minimize disruption from the A-5054 road (La Antilla – Isla Cristina). The second section will run along the Paseo de Poniente and will be located in the current central pedestrian area. To construct this section, the existing benches will be removed, as experience has shown that their number is excessive. This will free up space on the promenade so that the bike lane can be adjacent to the flowerbed.
The Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination 'Between Green and Blue', integrated into the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU Funds, and represents an investment of 2,589,440 euros in the area of Islantilla, Lepe and Isla Cristina channeled through the Ministry of Industry and Tourism of the Government of Spain, and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía.
Its implementation is being carried out by different Areas and Departments of the Commonwealth of Islantilla, in collaboration with the City Councils of Lepe and Isla Cristina.
