Press Release – Improvements included in the new accessible sidewalk roads

The commitment to accessibility on the North-South axis will allow for the creation of new parking spaces, the improvement of water infrastructure, and an increase in biodiversity in Islantilla.

Among other actions, rest areas will be created on the new accessible sidewalk and tree species with a greater capacity to absorb CO2 will be introduced.

The construction works of the two new sidewalk roads that will allow accessible pedestrian connection between the north and south areas of the Islantilla tourist center through the Paseo del Golf, the Paseo Barranco del Moro and the Paseo de la Vera, will bring considerable improvements such as the creation of new parking spaces, the renewal of the network of channels, as well as the increase in the biodiversity of this enclave through the introduction of tree species with a greater capacity to absorb CO2.

The creation of these new accessible sidewalks, an action carried out by TR Construya SLU and which is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations 'Between Green and Blue', represents an investment of 498,521.60 euros financed entirely through the NextGenerationEU Funds of the European Union and the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations 'Between Green and Blue'.

The works are currently in full execution phase, and their completion is planned for the beginning of 2026, thus responding to a wide demand from the residents of this tourist enclave shared by Lepe and Isla Cristina.

To carry out this project, a detailed technical assessment of the affected areas was necessary. This assessment allowed for a redesign of the water and sewer lines, resulting in fewer breakdowns, the creation of rest areas for pedestrians, an increase in the number of parking spaces (many reserved for people with reduced mobility), and other advantages. These improvements necessitated the removal of existing trees, thus facilitating the introduction of new tree species that will contribute to improved biodiversity in Islantilla. The selected species are characterized by their high CO2 absorption capacity and lower water requirements.

Environmentally, the replanting of the existing specimens has not been chosen for various reasons, mainly due to the low chances of survival of a high percentage of these trees in tree pits, due to the large loss of main roots involved in transforming a grassy transit area into a sidewalk accessible to people with reduced mobility and all types of pedestrians.

The importance of this action lies in the fact that it represents an improvement for the destination as it will allow for necessary mobility from a sustainability point of view, offering residents and visitors an alternative to motorized transport, and therefore, again impacting the environmental quality of the destination.

The construction of these two accessible sidewalk axes adds to the pilot project already initiated by the Islantilla Association with its own funds in a part of the Paseo del Barranco del Moro, and represents a synergy with other actions included in the Sustainability Plan, such as the climate adaptation of Islantilla, the creation of the transversal bike lane between Urbasur and La Antilla, the future electric vehicle service, the installation of parking areas with charging for electric scooters and bicycles, as well as the project to revitalize and promote nautical activities and blue tourism.

The Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination 'Between Green and Blue', integrated into the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU Funds, and represents an investment of 2,589,440 euros in the area of Islantilla, Lepe and Isla Cristina channeled through the Ministry of Industry and Tourism of the Government of Spain, and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía.

Its implementation is being carried out by different Areas, Departments and Services of the Commonwealth of Islantilla, in collaboration with the City Councils of Lepe and Isla Cristina.
