Along with Julio Cortazar and Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez, among others, he sparked the most prolific literary movement in Latin America, known as the Boom. In 1973, he published the satirical novel Pantale\u00f3n y las Visitadoras (Pantaleon and the Visitors), set in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.
